Accidentally Delicious

3 04 2008

All of my favorite recipes are either things I adapted out of laziness or lack of ingredients, or have been mistakes I have made on other recipes. This one is one I did on accident.

I sauteed some kale in olive oil and garlic one night, and sprinkled it with some cheese. I stuck it in a casserole dish to brown the cheese a bit under the broiler and wait for everything else I was cooking to finish up. I’m awful at getting everything to finish cooking at the same time, so something always suffers.

I forgot about the kale, and when I pulled it out it was completely crispy. I decided to just eat it anyway because it didn’t actually burn and turns out it was delicious. It tasted just like potato chips.

I had a bunch of kale last night so I decided to make some for the boy and I to munch on. We both wanted something sweet, so I put a little bit of Johnny’s seasoning (great on everything) and drizzled the kale with some honey.

I threw it in the oven at 350 degrees for about 10-12 minutes until it was all crispy, no signs of moisture. They turned out really good, except the honey made the kale stick to the baking sheet a little bit more, which just meant a little more effort to peel them off.

Great way to get your greens.

I went for a run yesterday and got lost again.   As you get closer to the water in my neighborhood, a lot of the streets start to wind and dont always go through. Its good for me, because then I get some extra running in against my will, but sucks when it makes you miss Degrassi. Paige got raped, and I missed the beginning, so I dont know who did it. I blame Spinner.

Lower body day today at the gym, with a little treadmill running. Its a light day cause I gotta get rolling on this seminar. I have to get the power point done by the end of the week. Which is tomorrow. I will be in front of the computer for a long while.

I Will Actually Be Spring Cleaning

29 03 2008

Work this morning was actually really fun. I usually dont work saturdays, but offered to to give the guys that do a break, so I worked with clients i usually dont work with. I tend to have a lot of older women on my regular shift with a lot of injuries and a lower experience level. Saturday mornings are for heavy hitters and it was a blast. i love my regular clients but I love to also just kick people’s asses and have them love it. It gives me more to do, too. My favorite exercises to do with more advanced clients is I stand up on a block in front of them with a medince ball up over my head. I  have them do squats and tap the bench with their butt then jump up in the air and push the medicine ball as hard as they can. They are always tenative at first but if you keep yelling at them they get mad and really try and shove you off. And then you laugh when they cant. If i did that with my regular clients they would start crying and we would have to have a heart to heart and discuss self esteem and feelings.
Last night the boy and I went to Talarico’s, famous for their 14″ slices of pizza. Or you can get a whole pizza, 28″ for around 30 bucks. Its ridiculously huge. The boy got a pint of PBR and a giant slice of pizza. I got an Ami’s Fresca (vodka, lemon, lime, grapefruit juice and 7-up) and an arugala and roasted eggplant salad with leeks and basalmic dressing. You can tell who’s the classy one. it was just ok. The drink was good though. it tasted just like a friend of mine’s own creation, Drunk in a Cup, but cost about 8 times more. Last summer a bunch of us went to her cabin for the weekend and we lived off drunk in a cup, doritos, and hot links. That was Friday. Saturday, none of us could move. Good Times.

Today is the big cleaning party to help Jerome and his roomates get the place ready to give back to the landlord. It’ll be the 3 boys and me and a girlfriend, who is dating one of the roomates. That sounds like a episode of Degrassi. (They are making a movie! Any one know what i am talking about….?) Anywhoo, our master plan is to get really drunk and then do such a terrible job that they yell at us and tell us to stop trying and they will just do it all themselves. That was how i got out of doing the dishes for my first 16 years of life. i have a feeling that will be a good workout in and of itself, but i will fit in a run later on today also. and stretching. I am so tight, no matter how much I stretch.  I know im losing flexibility because Im not doing gymnastics anymore, but Im not used to it. Its frustrating.

My dog hates me.

100_0610.jpg

I didn’t know dogs could make facial expressions, let alone one’s of disgust.

I caught him secretly working out when I wasn’t supposed to be home. He’s planning his revolt.

Hom Bow Spring Gets Its Butt in Gear

28 03 2008

Its snowing. I was wearing shorts last week and now its snowing. In Seattle. It doesnt even snow in winter in Seattle.

Well, its Friday, but I have to work tomorrow so no wild plans. I might get a drink or 2 with the boy before we go our seperate ways: he to clean his house for his move and I to bed so I can get up at 5:30am. i dont mind work so much, so its ok, and its not like i would be doing anything that early in the morning anyway, except sleeping, so I might as well make some money.

I tried my hand at panko last night and it turned out really well. I had some tofu so I covered it in spicy stir fry sauce, dipped it in the panko and pan fried it in a little bit of olive oil.

100_0607.jpg

I had it with a baked potato with mozzarella cheese and tapatio, and some kale chips with garlic salt. And the ever present D.C. It was suprisingly fast and easy, and really filling too.

100_0608.jpg

As I was looking for recipes to use the panko, i found they have whole wheat panko. I will try and find that next time, but i bet it is really expensive, like all things that are good for you. Especially shoes.

I defrosted some fish so Im going to panko that tonight, too. Panko is now a verb. Just like how “hom bow” is now a phrase. “Hom bow we order a lot of asian beer and harrass the waiter with our clever word plays?” I think with the fish I will dredge it in a little bit of egg and flour, see if i can get a nice thick coating on it. If it turns out ok Ill show you guys.

I would love to run outside today but the weather hates me so it looks like I will be confined to the gym.  Im starting to feel a little sick, too, and don’t want to exacerbate that by sweating in the cold. Working in a gym is worse than working in an elementry school: theres no way around catching what everyone is sweating everywhere. If its nice tomorrow I will go to Alki, the beach by my house, with the dog for a run/walk, its gorgeous down there and packed when its nice, which makes it more interesting.

As I am doing this seminar, it really upsets me how much misinformation is out there. i dont read a lot of hype-oriented fitness articles, but Im sure you guys do. Whats some weird stuff you hear about, that people might fall for. I know the basics: not eating at night, negative calorie foods, etc. What are some you guys have heard of, or maybe some that you arent sure if they are true? Maybe i can put them in my seminar.

Again, just trying to get you to do my work for me.

Success: its what I achieve through all your hard work.

Committed to my job, but soon the nut house

27 03 2008

This nutrition seminar is turning my brain to mush.  Soon you’ll find me in the corner, muttering about percent daily values and eating my own hair.

So today I decided to go for a run outside which tends to de-stress me more so than and indoor workout.  So I headed to the school across the street.

100_0577.jpg

They have a nice set of staris that I like to run also.

100_0425.jpg

The weather wasn’t perfect but it wasn’t raining. Until it started raining. Because this is springtime in Seattle.

I did a loop of stairs, track, stairs, track over and over and then i did a loop around the block and went home, because if I get sick I very well may die. I haven;t been sick in a long time and I have a feeling it is going to come soon, with a vengence.

There wasn’t much rhyme or reason to my running, as is that case with most of my workouts, so I cant really provide specifics. Today was sort of boring, my apologies. No, wait, I take that back. I’m not sorry. That’s just how some days are, and YOU come here to see what I do, so here there it is.

I will be posting lower body exercises tomorrow. Im only going to do a few but I have a ton, so I will do new ones every so often. I can’t show you all my best at once, can I? What would keep you coming back? My excellent proofreading ability?

Happy Jelly Bean Day!

23 03 2008

Just wanted to post really fast and wish everyone a happy Easter! My family isn’t too big on the holiday, but we are using it as an excuse to get my mom out of the hospital for a few hours, so we are having a ham crockpot lunch/dinner (linner? lupper?) I usually get a basket of fruit, but I don’t think I’ll be getting one this year. After how much the price of produce has gone up, I don’t blame them. I actually bought light canned strawberries yesterday because they were so cheap compared to the real ones.

I over did it on ice cream last night. I blame Chandra for her subliminal internet trickery. But I am going to go for a short run before dunch (that’s my favorite) and then hit the gym on the way back, plus a trip to the grocery store. I’ll show you guys my loot, and share my workout.

I have been asked about my work schedule, and how I eat if I get up for work at 4:15am. So here it is

  • BREAKFAST- 4:30am: approx. 300 calories
  • SNACK- 10:00am: approx. 200 calories
  • LUNCH- 3:00pm: approx. 500 calories
  • DINNER- 7:00pm: approx. 500 calories
  • SNACK: 9:00pm: approx. 200 calories

All of that is just what usually happens. Sometimes I eat more, rarely less calories and times, especially the morning ones, vary due to when I have sessions and what not.  I eat a lot of fiber so I don’t have much of a problem not eating for 5+ hours. Work gets hectic and the time flies so most of the time I don’t even notice I need to stop and eat, but I always do. I eat more by the clock than by my body because I dont know when I will have a chance next if I have 3 or 4 sessions back to back and won’t be able to take a break for a few hours.

Have fun celebrating the crucifixtion by eating your weight in marshmallow chicks! They should make marshmallow zombies because thats what happened right? A little more historically accurate?

I’m gunna get yelled at for that. It was bound to happen eventually.

20 03 2008

So here’s something sad.  A new client of mine’s husband works at the middle school across the street from my house.  Thats a huge coincidence because i work about 30 minutes away from home. Anyway, he is the orchestra teacher and complains because the students have to choose between PE , art, or music.  Since hes the orchestra teacher, his students obviously all chose music, and he is noticing most of them are overweight.  Early stages of planning here, but maybe I can implement some afterschool fitness program so they can get a little exercise.

That’s sad.  No child should have to choose between the arts and physical education.  I didn’t have a choice, you had to do all three.  They should have to fake “feminine problems” and twisted ankles to get out of running just like I did.

Tonight’s agenda is full of cleaning, visiting the ‘rents, and nutrition seminar preparation.  Thank goodness my last session for the day was at 9:00am. We had a meeting at 12, so that gave me some free time to fit a workout in at work.

We have a machine called a functional trainer with arms that go anywhere from straight up, to straight down and swing all the way out and in. There are cables attached to the arms and then we have all kinds of handle attachments.  You can basically do anything and work any body part on it.

 100_05151.jpg

My arms were killing me today from the gym last night so i kept it pretty mild.

I did:

  • 2 sets of 10 resisted step ups.  I used a block and placed the FT handles thusly:

100_0516.jpg

I stacked the weight to 15 on each side, held the handles, stepped up on my right and lifted my left leg behind me to work the glutes. I did 10 on each leg. they weight just added about 30 lbs to my body weight for extra resistance.

  • 2 sets of 10 standing rows; 20 pounds
  • 2 sets of 10 tricep pulldowns; 15 pounds. I put one arm of the FT pointing toward the ceiling, put on a rope attachment so I could hold on with both hands, kept my elbows in at my sides and just pushed the rope down from my chest to my waist and back
  • 2 sets of 10 bicep pull ups; 15 pounds. Same as the triceps but exactly opposite. FT arm is pointing towards ground, pull rope attachment from waist up to chest
  • 2 sets of 10 upside down (black side) bosu squats.  Having the bosu upside down makes it super unstable so it works the core and lateral stability of the legs very well.
  • 2 sets of 10 kettlebell swings. You stand feet shoulder width apart, holding the kettlebell in both hands between your legs. bend your legs, swing the kettlebell up above your head, and back down between your legs.  You have to try and slow it down and obsorb the momentun of it. Suprisingly, its more more of a leg workout than arms.

100_0521.jpg
This little guy (compared to a 5lb dumbell) weights 18 pounds. Kettlebells are all about absorbing the kettlebells momentum with your body, so it involves a lot of swinging and then slowing down the kettlebell.  I highly recommend taking a kettlebell class. Hoo, boy, you get a GREAT workout and amazing muscle definition.

  • 2 sets of plate drags down the hall.  These are great for your core and shoulders.  Put two weight plates (or magazines or dinner plates, etc. The more they weight the more resistance) on the ground.  Place your toes in the center of the plates and get into push up position: core tight, hips down.  Use your arms to “walk” down the hallway, keeping everything tight and being careful not to let your legs swing from side to side, like a seal.  I always threaten to sit on clients if they dont keep their hips down, thats what makes this work.

And thats about it. Im going to try and go for a short run later tonight, but other than that, I am done workout wise. It feels good to get it out of the way. i wish i could work out in the mornings but then I would have to wake up around 2:15, which, um, no.

So I am going to be SWAMPED at work for the next while. In addition to the three part nutrition seminar, I am also going to be the “nutrition consultant” for my work. (What’s funny is I don’t know what to call my work, its not a gym, but its not a studio either. None of us can figure out what to call it) All of the other trainers are men, and arent very nutrition savvy. So it falls on me. We have an online program that no one does so in order to make the clients more accountable we are going to set up nutrition consultations probably every month to get them in and really looking at the decisions they make. We have over 50 clients. I know some of them will tell us to shove it because they just want to get their butts kicked during a workout and don’t care about food, but geeze. I love nutrition and I am excited about doing this, I think it will be really fun and beneficial for them, but it just means lots more work. Fun work, but more work nonetheless.

I tried to size down the pics to make them easier to load last night, but it didn’t quite work, it just made the pictures blurry. Ill keep trying though, I promise.

Lets Just Get Right To It!

13 03 2008

Hey, all! You might know me as the personal trainer that spends way too much time on Kath’s site, or perhaps you were one of the three people that looked at my old blog (don’t feel bad, it was only up for about half a second) but things have calmed down a bit so here I am again. Think of me as your very own online personal trainer. Which is good for you, because I am free, and good for me, because I don’t have to wipe up your sweat after you leave.

So, first thing is first. Let’s all just behold the glory that are my new Puma Complete shoes.

blog-pictures.jpg

I have found that the only shoes I can comfortably workout in are Puma’s. I have pretty wide feet which cuts out a lot of options and New Balance’s rub the back of my ankle pretty bad. Plus, I like how they look, which is important, right?

I am aware they are a little dirty already, but that is because blindingly white shoes really bother me. So I scuff them up a bit immediately.

So my new shoes and I had a long day at work. Started at 5:30 am and finished at 2:00pm. I only had about 5 sessions today but I am completely in charge of a big 3 part nutritional seminar our facility is putting on in May. It would be fine if it was just clients, because I know them all and could just throw cupcakes at them and while preaching about trans fat and call it a success, but its going to be open to the public. And they are going to pay money to come, so if it sucks, they will probably throw things at me. Heavy things.

Here’s where you guys can help me out. I have the three sections planned: Decoding nutrition labels (whats the difference between reduced fat and low fat, recommended daily values, etc.) Busting nutrition myths (no eating at night because it turns to fat *what a crock*, crash diets, low carb diets, etc) and then how to eat healthy on a tight budget and an even tighter schedule. I think the last one will be the most fun because its practical things and I can share my hints for eating out, meal prep, etc. What would you guys like to see if you paid money for a nutritional seminar? And what are some good interactive things I can do? Please do my work for me.

After work, I was off to the gym. 20 minutes on the eliptical (I cut it 10 min short because the stupid fan was pointed on me and my hair kept getting caught in my eye) followed by stretching, abs, some dumbell rows, tricep kickbacks, one legged squats with dumbells, back extensions, and core holds. Then I wandered around Target for about 40 minutes since its right next door and I can’t be trusted with money.

Yesterday’s steps: 12,365

I wear a pedometer everyday. I aim for 12,000 steps on gym days and 15000 on non-gym days. I almost always hit it or go over. Its a great way to just make sure Im moving enough.

Ask some questions. What do you guys want to know?

Im off to make some dinner and take a bath.

Do 25 crunches. Right now.
